We are enjoying using Kahoot Quizzes to recap on our weeks work.

The soldiers visited our school and our classroom to present the Tricolour and the Proclamation to our school.

 

September 2015

Welcome back!

As another academic year starts I welcome all the students that will make up our classroom this year. We only have 3 pupils left from last year! 21 new people have moved into our weird and wonderful world. A special welcome to the children that have moved to our school from elsewhere. We will do our best to make you feel welcome.

We dressed up for Roald Dahl Day on September 24th. We watched puffin virtually live where we got to draw along with Quentin Blake.

National WOW day (Walk to School)was celebrated on Wednesday the 13th of May,
First Holy Communion for 2nd class was celebrated in Keel Church by Fr. Roche on Saturday the 9th of May.
We remembered the people who died on the Lusitania and the Titanic. We read a novel called the Titanic Tragedy. It was interesting, exciting and sad.
Dave has been coming on a Friday to coach us for Basketball.

St. Patrick’s Day: We learned about the life and times of St. Patrick in school. We paraded in Milltown on St. Patrick’s Day. The theme of our float was An Gaelbhratach and Castledrum 150.

RSA: Eileen from the Road Safety Authority visited us to discuss how we can be safer on our roads.

Both the Boys and Girls competed in the Mini 7’s competition in Cromane.

February
We concluded our Swimming lessons in Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. We really enjoyed our 6 sessions.

Ash Wednesday: We received the ashes on our foreheads and we recorded the items we were going to give up for Lent.

Pancake Tuesday was celebrated by having lovely delicious hot pancakes kindly cooked by Mr. Ryan.

Engineer visit to celebrate engineers week. Fionnán McCarthy a Civil Engineer visited us to talk to us about the job of an Engineer. Fionnán spends most of his time working on Wind Turbines. He used to work on roads and bridges.

Monsignor John O’Sullivan
Born in Boolteens on the 16th of July 1944
Attended Castledrum N.S., St. Brendan’s Seminary Killarney & St. Patrick’s College Thurles.
Ordained on the 8th of June 1968 in Thurles for St. Augustine’s Florida.
Celebrated his first mass in Keel Church on the 9th of June 1968.
Conferrered the prelate Honor of Reverend Monsignor in September 2000.
Involved in the building of churches and schools in the parishes he served in.
Monsignor John O’Sullivan retired in 2014 from Blessed Sacrament parish after being Pastor there for 34 years.
He now helps out as required in the Diocese.

Fr. Thaddeus Moriarty

Born Castledrum about the year 1603.
Entered the Dominican Order, sent overseas to study in Toledo & Lisbon.
After ordination he returned to Kerry. In 1653 it was decreed that all Catholic priests be banished. Fr. Moriarty & the remaining Dominicans left Tralee and withdrew to Castlemaine (Moriarty country).
At dawn on the 15th of August 1653, while celebrating mass, Fr. Moriarty was arrested by Cromwellian soldiers & marched to Ross Castle in Killarney. There he was held & grossly ill-treated for 2 months.
He was executed on Martyrs’ Hill Killarney on the 15th of October 1653.
No one knows for sure where he is buried.

Monsignor John Lenihan

Born in Castledrum on the 14th July 1929.
Attended Castledrum N.S. 1933 – 1942.
Attended St. Kieran’s College in Kilkenny.
Ordained at St. Mary’s Cathedral Kilkenny on June 7th 1953.
Initially served in the diocese of Kerry.
Went to Miami, Florida in March 1956.
Served in 2 parishes in Jacksonville from 1958 to 1977.
In 1977 became Pastor of San Jose Church.
Retired in 1999 after 22 years service there.
Died 6.2.2013 in Jacksonville Florida,U.S.A

During try it Tuesday our classroom ran/ walked over 500 laps at break times. That’s a staggering length of over 50kms. That’s farther away than Tralee, Killarney and Dingle!

We all wrote Halloween stories and entered them in the Kerryman Newspaper short story competition. We brainstormed and planned the stories. We then wrote our first draft. We edited our stories by self correcting, by getting our partners to read our stories and give feedback and by the teacher correcting. We then typed up our stories and printed them out.

In geography 4th learned the names and location of the countries of Europe. 3rd were learning about the rivers of Ireland and 2nd concentrated on the counties.

In History one of the topics we focused on was the people of Mesopotamia. We learned that they invented the idea of 60 minutes in an hour.

Maths week 2014 was a great success with our class taking part in the Target Boards, Mangahigh, a Maths Trail and Maths projects.

We have enjoyed using the computers to practice our typing skills. We have also continued to bring in our ICT devices on a Friday (BYOD). This gives us the opportunity to play Maths and English games.

Golf with Liam Duggan began on Wednesday 31st of April and will continue throughout May.
In Maths we are working with money. counting, ordering and working out change.

April:
Martin Horgan (the football coach)returned on Tuesday the 30th returned to begin his 6 week block.
We completed projects on various countries from around the world. We presented them to the class.
We got our Easter holidays on Friday 11th for 2 weeks.
We learned about Jesus’ life the days before his death.
We continue to record and log signs of Spring for the Greenwave project.
Our tadpoles continue to grow!

March
Parish mission taking place from 23rd-28th of March. Fr. Derek the mission priest came in to school to explain all about the mission and how we could participate.
All our classroom participated in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Milltown. It was great fun.

We now use Dropbox to store and show interesting pictures and information to each other as well as having a store of extra resources and materials available to us.
We continue to have French lessons with Mrs. Griffin and use our phrases when we Skype our friends in France.
We presented our projects on Ancient Egypt.
We learned about Saint Patrick, his life and the stories associated with him. We created Leprechaun faces in Art.

We spotted frogspawn for the first time this year.

Scott came to our school to give a workshop on Forces. We designed and made Go-Karts. We raced our Karts down the ramp to test them.

Greenwave data was collected each day. We measured the wind speed using the anemometer and recorded the temperature.

Engineer Week: We had a visit from an Engineer who told us all about the job of an Engineer.

Stormy weather dominated the Christmas period and resulted in lots of fallen trees, flooding and high tides in the local area.

We continue to contact our French Skype friends near Paris. We have learned the names of the animals in French and this allowed us to play a game of Battleships against our French friends.

We made St. Brigid’s crosses to celebrate St. Brigid’s day which is on February 1st. We explored some of the stories and myths surrounding one of our most famous saints.

Christmas Concert
On Tuesday the 17th we held the Christmas concert in the church. We told the story of the birth of baby Jesus. Marcus and Sophie were Joseph and Mary. Ellen, Keelan and Dylan were the Inn Keepers, Gavin, Eden and Ben were the shepherds, Marc, Connie and Carla were the 3 Kings, Jack was the little drummer boy and Tirna, Abbie, Allissa, Oisín and Jesse were Reindeers along with some of Mrs. griffins class. Jamie and Máire-Chau were Santa and Mrs. Clause. Mr. MacGearailt’s class were the narrators and other speaking parts. There was a big crowd and they all said that we were excellent. We really enjoyed it. Happy Christmas everyone!

On Thursday the 28th we contacted a Marine Biologist called Annie who works in Newcastle in England. She told us all about a variety of sea animals. She even showed us some! We saw starfish (common, cushion), a crab, a hermit crab, a lobster, a sea urchin and a sea anemone.

Our new French friends
On Thursday the 21st we had our first skype call with a school in France. We have signed up to take part in an e-twinning project with them to help us to improve our French and to help them to improve their English. We got a chance to tell them our age and how many brothers and sisters we have. They then had to guess what our name was. It was really enjoyable. We had to do the same thing for them. We look forward to talking to them again soon.

Maths week in Mr Ryans room
During the week we completed a range of activities which were a pleasant and enjoyable change from using a book. On Monday Mrs. griffin took 1st + 2nd between 2pm and 3pm to do station activities using notation boards, IWB games, and Calendar activities. On Tuesday we continued with the work on target boards and completed challenges on Mangahigh. On Wednesday we continued our work on the target boards. On Thursday we had station activities with Mrs. Dorgan. We made 3d shapes out of 2D nets (with help from Ms. O’Brien), card games (old maid) IWB games from Mangahigh and domino games. On Friday we got to go out to the computer room to go on Mangahigh and complete some target boards. Also we got to do a Maths trail around the school where we were put into groups with other people in the school. We had to find out answers to questions on the sheets. The winners were the team with the most correct answers.

Our Classroom
In our classroom we love to use technology. We have an interactive whiteboard, a visualiser, a flipvideo and a digital camera. We use class dojo as a way of rewarding good behaviour. We think the avatars are really cool looking.

We love to do PE. This term we hope to do gymnastics in the sportsfield hall. . Martin is our Gaelic Football coach. We go swimming before Christmas. Other things we enjoy include station teaching, athletics, dance and games such as basketball and rounders.

In Maths we like playing tables champions where we try to beat each other to the correct answer. We end up with a daily champion. Sometimes 1st class even manage to beat a 3rd class person!

We go to the computer room once a week. We like playing Maths, Geography, English and Irish games. We have started to use Mavis Beacon to improve our typing and Know your Ireland to improve our knowledge of the physical geography of Ireland

Roald Dahl Day:
On Roald Dahl day and the teacher let us dress up as charecters from his books. I dressed up as fantastic Mrs Fox. A lot of people dressed up as Mitilda and they all looked pretty in their blue dresses. Some people dresses up as the twits, witches, The hunters from Fantasic Mr fox, catsand lots more of his charecters! think everyone did their best.

Skype in the classroom
We love to get in contact with other schools from around Ireland and from around the world. We find out facts about their schools and local areas. We compare and contrast these facts with our own lives. So far we have chatted with students in Spain, USA, Ireland, England, Australia.

Maths Week
We got to do lots of hands on activities inside and outside the classroom.
We did a Maths Trail together with the other classes, some of the questions were really difficult.

We did station activities on 2 different days thanks to the help of Mrs. Griffin and Mrs. Dorgan. Overall we really enjoyed the week
